Excursions from Sharm El Sheikh to Catherine Monastery, Moses Mountain

Catherine Monastery

The Greek Orthodox Monastery of Saint Catherine in Sinai, Egypt, was founded between 548 and 565. It lies at the foot of Mount Sinai (Mount of Moses). Here was said to be the burning bush in which God revealed himself to Moses; according to legend, the bones of St. Catherine of Alexandria, although there is no historical evidence of their existence. The monastery, originally dedicated to Theotokos, ie Mary, the mother of Jesus, was built in the west from the 14th and in the east from the 19th century after St. Martyr named Catherine.

The complex with outbuildings and gardens is located an average of 1585 meters above sea level in the heart of South Sinai near the village of Milga below the 2285 m high Mount Sinai and the higher Jebel Katrina and covers an area of 100 hectares. The actual monastery, built as a fortress, has a floor area of 76 by 85 meters.

In order to keep the monastery running in view of the large number of visitors (around 50,000 a year), the opening hours and the accessible areas of the monastery have now been severely restricted. For visitors there is only a café with a few tables and benches in front of the door. The monastery has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002.

Mount Sinai

Mount Sinai The regular road ends at St. Catherine's Monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai at an altitude of around 1585 metres. From here, the 700 meters in altitude and around 2500 m long ascent can only be continued on foot or by camel. On the last, much steeper section, around 300 m below the summit, around 300 m below the Elija-Mulde, where the biblical prophet is said to have withdrawn at times and was then spoken to by God, 750 steps hewn into the rock have to be overcome. During the entire ascent, almost 4000 steps have to be mastered. View from the top of Mount Sinai

At the summit is a 12th-century mosque and a chapel dedicated to Moses and the Holy Trinity, built in 1934 on the ruins of a basilica built by Emperor Justinian I between 548 and 565. In winter, snow can also fall at this altitude, which can be dangerous if you are not equipped enough to climb the mountain.

Pilgrims and tourists like to climb the mountain towards the end of the night in the dark - sometimes in large crowds - in order to experience the sunrise on the summit. religious meaning
