The "Treasure House"

At the confluence of the Siq in the valley basin stands the probably most famous building of Petra, the almost 40 m high and 25 m wide Khazne al-Firaun, built in the Hellenistic style. The "Pharaoh's Treasury", as it was called by the Bedouins, was actually one of numerous rock tombs. It may have been created for the Nabataean king Aretas IV, who ruled in the 1st century BC. reigned. Other researchers date the Khazne, however, only in the 2nd century AD, in the time of Emperor Hadrian. A small tholos, a round temple, flanked by two half gables, rises above a portico of six Corinthian columns. There are weathered remains of relief figures between the columns. Bullet holes can be seen on the urn at the top of the round temple. They go back to shots fired by Bedouins who had once tried to break open the supposed treasure container. However, like the entire building and the other royal tombs of Petra, the urn consists mainly of solid rock.

The Roman Theater

On the way from Khazne al-Firaun to the center of Petra is the Roman Theater on the left, which was also carved directly out of the rock. Depending on the source, it offered between 5,000 and 10,000 spectators on 45 rows of seats. To prevent water from collecting in the arena when it rained, the Nabataeans installed a sophisticated drainage system. The typically Roman style of the theater can be seen, for example, in the elevated stage. The pillared back of the stage was two stories high and decorated with frescoes, statues and marble friezes. A 25 m high wall closed off the theater from the outside. When it was built in the 1st century, some burial chambers were uncovered that had previously been driven into the rear rock massif. In ancient times, the simple inhabitants of the city were buried in shaft graves like this. The theater was probably destroyed by an earthquake in 363 AD. In 1961 it was rediscovered and excavated by American archaeologists [2].

The Tombs of the King's Wall

To the north of the theater, the so-called “Königswand” rises on the right-hand side. Halfway up, 13 monumental funerary temples are lined up here, which are interpreted as royal tombs due to their size and decoration. These include the "palace tomb", the largest complex in Petra, the "Corinthian tomb", the "soldier's tomb" and the "urn tomb" from the 2nd or 3rd century AD. Its rock hall contains three burial niches. It also has a forecourt surrounded by columns, which can be reached via a brick substructure. North of the so-called royal tombs is the somewhat smaller "tomb of Sextius Florentinus". The architectural styles of the tombs show Nabataean, Greek and Roman influences.
