Route

The excursion takes you on a three-hour drive to the oldest surviving bastion of Christianity, St. Catherine's Monastery. The journey is characterized by breathtaking panoramas of barren rock formations and vast desert landscapes, where only a few Bedouin tents can be seen here and there. The monastery was founded between 527 and 535 AD by Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora at the foot of Mount Moses and Mount Megafa. The monastery has been a place of prayer and study for over 1450 years. Saint Catherine was born in 294 AD. born with the name Dorothea to an Alexandrian noble family. She studied poetry, music, art, physics, mathematics, astronomy and philosophy at a secular school. When she converted to Christianity, she was baptized Catherine. Because of her faith in Jesus Christ, Emperor Maximus had her tortured and beheaded in Alexandria on November 25, 305. Her body disappeared and, according to legend, was carried by angels to the highest mountain peak in Sinai, which is now named after her. Three centuries later, monks of the monastery, following a dream, found her body, carried it down the mountain and laid it to rest in a sarcophagus decorated with gold leaf, which now stands in the chapel of the basilica. In the 7th century, the Prophet Mohammed had a document drawn up in which he promised protection for the monastery and waived all taxes. A copy of the document can be seen in the unique icon gallery - it hangs next to a 1798 letter of safekeeping from Napoleon. A mosque built within the walls of the monastery in 1381 led the advancing Ottoman army to conclude that the complex was partly Muslim, and protected the monastery from destruction. Since the 11th century, the monastery of the Transfiguration of Christ has been known as St. Catherine's Monastery. The monastery library houses 5,000 books and over 3,000 manuscripts (mostly written in Greek), some of which are among the oldest and most important in the world - second only to the Vatican Library. Throughout its history, the monastery has received gifts from popes, princes of the Christian faith, and most importantly, from the Russian tsars, who considered themselves the natural successors of the Byzantine emperors. In the monastery you will visit the Chapel of the Burning Bush, the Icon Gallery and the spring of Jitros.
