Luxor consists of three parts: the city of Luxor on the east bank of the Nile, the temple district of Karnak and Thebes on the west bank of the Nile. The city is rich in historical evidence of a bygone high culture. For centuries, Thebes was the noblest residence and most powerful city in the Orient. Like all cities of ancient Egypt, Thebes was divided into the kingdom of the dead on the west bank and the kingdom of the living on the east bank. Luxor was known to the Greeks as "Thebes of the Hundred Gates". Luxor is also the departure point for Nile cruises.
